As part of its strategy for practical support of the environmental sector and sustainable development, Eurobank Cyprus participated with the volunteer team of TeamUp employees in a recent tree-planting event at the community of Pera Orini.
The action took place within the LIFE-AgrOassis project’s framework, co-funded by the European Union, which aims to tackle desertification and rural adaptation to climate change, in countries such as Cyprus and Greece. The tree-planting events are under the auspices of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou.
Volunteers from the Bank’s staff and managers, together with their family members, helped plant 380 deep-rooted trees and shrubs, covering a 2km area. These plants were especially adapted to drought conditions, and intended to restore traditional hedgerows on degraded agricultural land. The saplings were grown in special root-depth-increasing tubes to reduce irrigation requirements, as well as to enhance their drought resistance. The project is expected to conclude in 2026, and aims to create 30 kilometres of vegetation barriers, encompassing 18,000 trees and shrubs.
“For Eurobank Cyprus, sustainable development is a strategic priority and in this context we are implementing an integrated plan of environmental actions,” commented Senior General Manager COO of Eurobank Cyprus, Achilleas Malliotis.
“Our presence at the recent tree-planting is part of our social responsibility, and the culture we promote as a Bank for active participation in beneficial actions for society and the environment, as well as productive sectors of the economy, such as agriculture, which is suffering from the serious consequences of the climate crisis,” he added.
