To mark World Hypertension Day, the Cyprus Society of Cardiology and the Cyprus Society of Internal Medicine, with the valued support of the Pancyprian Medical Association and pharmaceutical company Medochemie, have joined forces to launch an awareness-raising campaign aimed at raising public consciousness about the serious risks posed by high blood pressure.
The campaign was officially announced at a May 22, 2025 press conference, held at the Cyprus Society of Cardiology. At the heart of the campaign lies a clear and powerful message on the importance of prevention and timely intervention: “Measure your blood pressure accurately – Control it – Live longer.”
Responding to the alarming prevalence of hypertension in the Cypriot population, the campaign seeks to highlight the urgent need for public awareness, regular monitoring and a change in attitude towards one of the most underestimated yet dangerous conditions of our time.
The statistics are stark:
- Tens of millions of people worldwide, or 25 per cent of the adult population, suffer from hypertension, which is linked to a sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical exercise, unhealthy diet, obesity, stress and smoking.
- In Cyprus, one in three people or 29.5 per cent of the population, are hypertensive. Among those over the age of 60, the figure rises dramatically, with two in three Cypriots affected by high blood pressure.
- A significant proportion of individuals are unaware they have hypertension, which experts refer to as a “silent killer” due to its gradual and often unnoticed damage to the heart, brain and blood vessels.
Dr Kyriakos Yiangou, President of the Cyprus Society of Cardiology, stressed that initiatives such as the hypertension campaign are designed to raise both awareness and knowledge. They aim to foster understanding of the scale of the problem, the value of prevention and the importance of both medicinal and non-medicinal intervention, contributing to a reduction in the adverse effects of hypertension.
Dr Andreas Stylianou, President of the Cyprus Society of Internal Medicine, described hypertension as a “silent threat” and stressed that this year’s initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce the number of adults with undiagnosed or uncontrolled hypertension – a key objective of the World Health Organisation.
Dr Petros Agathangelou, President of the Cyprus Medical Association, congratulated the Cyprus Society of Cardiology, the Cyprus Society of Internal Medicine and Medochemie for their vital initiative. He noted that the prevention and management of high blood pressure require strengthened primary care, systematic screening and an active alliance between doctor, patient and society.

Nicos Christides, Sales Director at Medochemie, stated that as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme, Medochemie supports awareness events aimed at improving public wellbeing and quality of life. Addressing the public directly, he urged citizens to heed their doctors’ advice and regularly monitor their blood pressure, in conjunction with physical activity, a balanced diet, smoking cessation and stress reduction.
It is worth noting that during the campaign, the public will have the opportunity to receive information from cardiologists and internists regarding the serious complications that high blood pressure can cause, as well as effective methods for its prevention and management. The campaign is accompanied by informative videos, scientific articles and press releases across print and digital media, further strengthening the multifaceted effort to raise awareness.
Because a single measurement can save your life!
