Is it impossible to predict the future? Perhaps, but it’s still worth discussing. Interested? Welcome to TEDxUniversityofNicosia (TEDxUNic), the only university TEDx experience in Cyprus. The second TEDxUNic, which addresses the theme, “The Future Is…”, is a full-day event beginning at 8:00 AM on Saturday, 21 November at the Filoxenia Conference Center in Nicosia.
What is TED? Simply put, TED is about ideas worth spreading. The concept began three decades ago in California, evolving into a worldwide phenomenon as a forum for thought leaders, innovators, and specialists – each of whom gives a “TED Talk” of approximately 18 minutes, which is then made available, online at TED.com. Past TED presenters include Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall and Philippe Starck. What is TEDx? TEDx is a program of local, self-organized TED-style events that combine live speakers and musical performances, with videos of select TED Talks. It’s a seminar, a gathering of like-minded individuals, a fantastic networking opportunity… a truly extraordinary Saturday.
The University of Nicosia is actively involved in supporting events such as TEDx that contribute to making Cyprus a more knowledge-driven society. “The Future Is…” will again be curated by the University’s Assistant Professor of Communications, Dr. Nicholas Nicoli, with assistance and support from an enthusiastic group of staff, students and alumni, and with audiovisual support from the University’s own production unit, Mediazone. Last year’s TEDxUNic, which asked everyone to “Look Deeper”, was attended by more than 400 people, with many more participating via a live Web link.
The caliber of speakers and performers who will participate at “The Future Is…” is astonishing. Geraint Rees, Dean of Life Sciences at UCL, will discuss the neural basis of human consciousness, while Rachel Wingfield of Loop.pH will explain how architecture, design and technology can be combined to transform spaces into experiences that rethink the future. Local speakers include Stelios Anastasiades, Chairman of the Cyprus Communication Agencies Association (SDEK), who will provide a glimpse into the future of advertising, and Yiorgos Dangos of the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO), who will take TEDxUNic attendees on a voyage into outer space.
In addition to these scintillating presentations, “The Future Is…” also comprises musical performances by The Larnaca Municipality Children’s Choir and the Papageorgio String Quartet, with a delicious all-you-can-eat buffet lunch and hot coffee throughout the day.
The TEDxUNic team envisions “The Future Is…” as a unique all-day event that will slake the thirst of those who wonder about the future; who believe, as Hamlet told Horatio: “There are more things in heaven and earth… Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Whatever your philosophy is, “The Future Is…” will spark deep discussion and connection, and provide insight into what lies ahead.
