British High Commission – Chief Scientist for Research and Innovation of the Republic of Cyprus – Research Promotion Foundation

The British High Commission hosted a visit to London of Cyprus’ newly appointed Chief Scientist Kyriacos Kokkinos on 6-7 March in order to strengthen partnerships between the UK and Cyprus in research and innovation.

During the visit, Cypriot officials held meetings with the UK Government’s General Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, while they also visited the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, the UK Research and Innovation, and met with representatives of the Foreign Office’s Science and Innovation Network, including Professor Carole Mundell, Chief Scientific Adviser of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Furthermore, they visited the Imperial College, the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, and the Cabinet Office of Digital Services, which leads on the UK’s digital transformation.

The two sides agreed to take specific initiatives to create mutually beneficial partnerships which will offer new development opportunities for the entrepreneurial innovation ecosystem. The visit gave the Cypriot delegation the opportunity to gain an insight into the governance of the UK’s research and innovation system and experience best practice in Britain, which is a world leader in the field.

Commenting on the visit, Mr. Kokkinos said it had two goals. “On one hand, to explore possibilities of deepening cooperation between our two countries on research and innovation, building on our multilevel partnerships in academia and research and on the other hand, to create new partnerships which will focus on common modern challenges like ageing population and climate change”, he said. According to Mr. Kokkinos, these challenges can become fields of developing innovative solutions based on modern technologies like artificial intelligence.

Mr. Kokkinos added that “despite its small geographic size, Cyprus is not an ‘island’ but a bridge of cooperation between Europe and the Middle East in the fields of science, research and innovation”.

High Commissioner Stephen Lillie said that “This visit is an important milestone in further strengthening research and innovation ties with Cyprus, where we are already strong partners, but also structuring them in a more decisive way. The two biggest research projects in Cyprus (KIOS and RISE) are partnerships with UK institutions, and there are currently over 500 collaborative links between our countries via the Horizon 2020 programme. We are natural partners in research and innovation given our strong education links and similar institutional frameworks and we are keen to build on this in the future”.

It is worth noting that, the KIOS project for the development of a centre of excellence, is implemented within the context of the European Commission’s “TEAMING” Programme of the “HORIZON 2020” Framework Programme with a collaboration between the University of Cyprus and Imperial College. It is one of the biggest research and development projects in Cyprus, conducting cutting-edge multidisciplinary research and innovation in the area of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with an emphasis on the Monitoring, Control, Security and Management of Critical Infrastructure Systems.

University College London is a key partner in RISE (Research Centre on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies), which is a project implemented within the aforementioned EC Programme, and which concerns the development of a centre of excellence in Cyprus, aiming to boost the innovation-led economy of the country and build Cyprus into a regional innovation hub.

On Tuesday 12th March, excavation works began at the site of Cybarco’s ambitious new development on the Limassol Seafront, signifying the next phase of construction for Trilogy.

Now a year into construction, Trilogy’s Project Manager, Nick Papandreou, commented on the progress of works on site: We are on schedule – the start of today’s excavation marks an important milestone for the project. Customers will now be able to witness the physical progress in contrast to previous fundamental temporary works executed below ground level. We can now shift our focus to the construction of the permanent sub and super structure works.”

With financing secured and a team of expert international consultants on board for its design and development, Trilogy is one of the largest high-rise projects in the Mediterranean region and the only large-scale project on the island to have begun construction before launching property sales. A trio of shimmering beachfront towers with facilities of a five-star hotel and a bustling public plaza, Trilogy is destined to become a landmark address to live, work and play in the heart of Cyprus’ most vibrant city.

Currently, the first phase diaphragm wall, the West and the East Tower piling, and the erection of the first two tower cranes have been completed. The dewatering system, construction of the second phase diaphragm wall and basement piling are also underway. The West Tower will be completed at the end of 2021, followed by the East Tower at the beginning of 2022.

Trilogy Limassol Seafront is a €350 million mixed-use development. Sales and reservations of its luxury properties have exceeded €100 million in under a year, accounting for more than 35% of units in the two front towers. Its well-designed, spacious sea view apartments and offices offer a unique opportunity to invest in beachfront property in a premium location, with first-class facilities and at very competitive prices. Indicatively, prices for three-bedroom apartments start at €1,090,000 (€5,000 per square metre).

Internationally acclaimed professor and best-selling Cypriot author Costas Markides was the keynote speaker last week, in the launch of BoC’s Skills Accelerator programme. The programme is aimed to arm staff with the knowledge and skills they need to stay at the top of their game amid the rapid advances in technology.

Dr Markides is a professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Chair of Strategic Leadership at the London Business School. He is the author of several articles and books on business and strategy, holds a PhD from Harvard Business School and is a well-known conference speaker across the world.

“Skills Accelerator”

Addressing a packed hall, and with his characteristic humour, Dr Markides explained to BoC staff the importance of the concept of “Small Steps – Big Impact” – in short, how the small steps taken by each individual can cumulatively bring about major change for all. “We can no longer afford to distance ourselves from new technologies,” Markides told his audience. He advised those wishing to evolve professionally or those wishing to see their organisation evolve, to adopt small everyday changes easing the transition to the inevitable coming changes in technology as a result of digitization. “Refusing to change is not the solution,” he remarked. Citing examples from major corporations and the internet, Markides gave specific tips on how employees can acquire the skillsets required in the digital age.

“Easy, straightforward solutions for which we need set aside no more than one hour a week, or as long at it takes to enjoy a coffee,” he said. One way would be to take Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). “I am not asking you to climb Mount Everest. Rather, what I am suggesting is that you take small steps in changing the way you do things, which will enhance your skillset and arm you with the confidence and encouragement you will need to keep moving forward. Let us realize that, with relatively small effort, we are able to achieve a great deal; let us see change as an opportunity!” he said, receiving a warm applause.

Dr Markides’ lecture was the first in a series scheduled as part of the Skills Accelerator programme, which features instructional events such as talks by other distinguished speakers, as well as seminars and workshops on technology, expertise and future skills. Enhancing our staff’s knowledge and skills is an ongoing drive at Bank of Cyprus that is dynamically being implemented.

CALLAS celebrates the life of a woman who was hounded by reporters all over the world, and defined by her relationship with the press.  A demanding perfectionist, Maria Callas believed that two different women lived in her: Maria, the woman who yearned for a normal life; and Callas, the public figure and icon with a notable reputation as a tempestuous diva.  “The production is an intimate revelation of the torrid love affair between Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis,” says Paul Lambis. “It sets the stage for a Greek tragedy that recalls the tangled web of desire and deceit.”

On playing the iconic diva, Paola Hadjilambri commented that the role of Maria Callas is equally, if not more challenging than her previous role.  “Callas was a perfectionist, just like me. Fully inhabiting the character of one of the world’s most chic operatic personas will be a source of inspiration to me.  I have no intention of representing her with anything other than great respect.”

CALLAS, is scheduled to commence its Cyprus tour in October 2019, with productions staged in English and Greek.  Thereafter, Hadjilambri and Lambis will head back to Broadway, New York, to represent Cyprus for the second consecutive year.

Sponsors of the “Wings of Hope Trip”

The participants of this year’s charity event “Wings of Hope Trip”, returned to Cyprus on 1 April with wonderful memories, after contributing to one of the most successful fundraising events for Telethon.

The “Trip” to Prague became a reality thanks to the sponsorship of Petrolina and its associate company PTT Aviation Services, which sponsored the fuel for the trip. Around 70 people participated in the trip, which is expected to generate a net revenue of around €15,000 for Telethon.

The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics and the Cyprus Muscular Dystrophy Association, who organise the Telethon event in Cyprus, extended their warm thanks to Petrolina and PTT Aviation Services for their long-standing support to the “Trip”. Telethon has been organised in Cyprus since 1994, aiming to financially support the effort for better treatments and a better quality of life for the members of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This year’s Telethon campaign is organised under the slogan “TELETHON 2019, let our heart speak!”

The Cypriot petroleum company Petrolina supports, through its Corporate Social Responsibility programme, events that support the work of charitable foundations with a proven track record of contributing to improvements in public health and quality of life. Telethon, among other things, supports specific scientific research programmes on neurological and genetic disorders.
